The Fifty Shades of Grey Delicious Pleasure Silicone Ben Wa Balls 64g are my first exploration into not only the world of Ben Wa balls, but Kegel exercises as a whole. After having used them for around two weeks every day now, I can happily say they have been the perfect introduction into it, and I couldn’t have picked a better product. Not only have I not gotten bored of them, I can actually feel them working inside me and am able already to monitor my improvements.
Since starting reviewing I’ve learnt a hell of a lot. I’m pretty much learning something new every day, whether it be about my own sexuality and what I like in terms of toys, other peoples experiences and preferences, or just general sex toy knowledge such as ways to sterilise a toy. I research a lot for my reviews, and it’s kind of like that idea of how the best way to retain knowledge is to teach other people. One thing I have been super interested in learning since starting this whole blogging adventure though, has been regarding Kegel Exercises. What are they? What are pelvic floor muscles? And furthermore, what the hell are Ben Wa balls?! If this sounds like the sort of thoughts you have too, and don’t worry, I was in the same boat a few months ago, then this’ll probably be the perfect read for you.
Kegel exercises are small workouts you can do to train your pelvic floor muscles, which support your uterus, bladder, small intestine and rectum. Ageing, as well as pregnancy and childbirth, can loosen your muscles, and by strengthening them you can help to prevent or control urinary incontinence (when you sneeze or laugh and lose a small amount of urine), as well as improved orgasms. To exercise them, you need to locate the muscles, and then lay on your back, contracting and relaxing them for a few minutes a day, a few times a day. So, where does Ben Wa balls fit in? Well, if you live a busy lifestyle like me, or just know you are going to be too lazy to do internal exercises every day, then they provide the perfect solution. You can pop them inside once a day, and they’ll do all the work of exercising your pelvic floor muscles for you, without you having to do barely a thing. Basically, Ben Wa balls are hollow balls with a small weight in the centre. As you move about, the weight will hit the sides of the balls and therefore stimulate vibrations within the vagina, which will contract the muscles for you. This way, you can be strengthening your muscles throughout the day, or even while you are in public, and can reap the benefits after. The only downside is you have to be moving around when wearing them, as they are essentially useless if you are just sitting down. Recommended a day is around 30 minutes of use, and I find they work best when I’m cooking or cleaning up around the house. Although, because of this, it is definitely the first sex toy to actually encourage me to do more housework.
I chose these particular balls over the other two in the Fifty Shades of Grey sex toy line due to their beginners weight, the fact that the first ball has a tapered tip, and the overall luxury look they have. My order was placed on Lovehoney on the 11th of June, and I promptly received them on the 18th. The packaging was incredibly discreet, a plain brown box with the Lovehoney name not appearing once, and the product being listed as ‘Novelty’. So if privacy is a concern at all for you, you need not worry about it when ordering from Lovehoney. Inside I was presented with the Fifty Shades of Grey packaging box. It’s black and silver, and very elegant and tasteful. No matter what your opinion on the Fifty Shades of Grey books, they certainly know how to sell sex toys. On the side of the box is an excerpt of when the balls where used in the book for all the fans, as well as a little information on using the balls. Once opened, the box contains three items. Firstly, there is a small instruction booklet which again has the book excerpt, as well as more detailed instructions on their use. Then there is a beautiful drawstring silver satin pouch which has the Fifty Shades logo on it and is absolutely wonderful. Ok, so it’s probably not that amazing, but it’s the first toy I’ve bought that came with a pouch, and so I’m in love. Plus it really adds to that luxury feel I was after. Lastly there is, obviously, the product.
The two silver balls which can be removed for maintenance purposes are made of ABS plastic, weighing 32g / 1.1oz each, with a combined weight of 64g / 2.3oz. They are then surrounded with a dark grey harness made of super safe silicone, meaning it’s non-toxic and non-porous. There is a 6.4 cm / 2.5 inches removal cord as well, also made of silicone, which is meant to hang outside your vagina to help you remove them, similar to the string that is attached to a tampon. The silicone has an engraved line pattern running the length of it, as well as the Fifty Shades logo engraved into the back of the ball closest to the removal cord. However, the luxurious aspect of this product ends there. Firstly, there is a very visible seam along the length of the silicone. This, of course, doesn’t effect the product in any way, but you expect to have seamless products in luxury toys. Furthermore, the removal cord is simply far too stretchy. When I pull on it to help remove them, it just stretches rather than pulling them out. I think a stronger and more firm material should have really been used here, as while it does help after a while of pulling, I am constantly worried it will snap and break. As for the balls themselves, they too have a large seam, and my biggest fear is one day they will just split open. There is also two holes in the tapered end of one of the balls. I have no idea why this would be, but luckily I only have to deal with this and the seams when I’m cleaning them, not during use.
When I started wearing these, I was pretty confident my muscles would totally be able to handle them. I’m pretty young, so wearing these for me is more for the novelty, combined with the idea of starting young to help prepare for my inevitable ageing. The first few days however, they fell out a lot. Not completely out, but enough that I could feel the first ball poking out without having to insert my finger. I was pretty shocked at my apparent lack of strength, but after I got use to them, on about the fourth day mark they stopped coming out and now sit snuggly. I haven’t yet gone out in public with them, but I’m confident enough now that I know I could. I don’t always feel the balls moving around, but I do on occasions if I’m making big movements or steps, and it’s pretty dang cool. I love to cook, so these are perfect for when I’m doing that, and as a fan of multitasking, I love it.
To insert them, I find it easiest to lay on my back with my legs up, however I have heard you can insert them standing up, similar to putting in a tampon. You should use lots of lube, since the silicone is quite draggy and can cause pain if not lubricated properly. Make sure you only use water-based lube however, as pairing a silicone material with silicone-based lube can cause damage to the toy. When inserting them, they should slide in easily if lubricated adequately and then push them back as far as they can go. I try to do at least half an hour a day, but usually do around an hour to an hour and a half, especially if I’m cooking and don’t want to start taking them out while I have things on the stove.
While I got these intending to use them for solely for Kegel exercises, I just had to investigate more into their ‘Delicious Pleasure’ title. Firstly, they are meant to stimulate my g-spot as I wear them around, I haven’t really noticed this personally, but my g-spot is pretty elusive, so I’m not surprised. Even though I’m wearing them for a perfectly practical purpose however, it does make me feel incredibly naughty to have them in without anyone knowing, similar to when I wear a butt plug. Because of this, plus the fact they are stimulating me, I am always very wet the entire time I wear them. It’s kind of like foreplay whilst I do other things. They are perfect if I plan to masturbate directly after wearing them, because it means being able to put larger dildos inside me that usually I would need a warm up for otherwise. Using a massager wand or clitoral vibrator while they are in is a weird experience, but feels amazing during orgasm when my muscles clench around them. Furthermore, they add interest to casual spankings as I can feel the balls moving around inside.
While these Ben Wa balls are relatively simple to clean, I find they are still quite high maintenance since the balls need to be taken out of the silicone harness, which isn’t the easiest of things to do. It can be done however, gets easier every time, and is recommend in order to clean the product effectively. Both the balls and silicone can be cleaned with warm water and anti-bacterial toy cleaner, however only the silicone is able to be sterilised, which you can do by either wiping it down with a 10% bleach solution or boiling it. As I mentioned earlier, there is two holes in one of the balls, and so I’m always careful to avoid any water getting inside. Make sure everything is dry before putting the balls back in their harness, and then use the pouch for storage. Since the silicone is a huge lint-magnet, these need to be cleaned before use as well, but the balls do not need to be removed this time.
Overall, I well and truly love these balls. They are fun to wear, improve my health, make me do housework, and are very pleasurable. Plus, I can already tell they’ve helped strengthen my muscles and are working. Even though I can keep these in now, I feel no need to upgrade to a heavier pair, and am fully content to continue wearing these everyday for a long while. I have only found two real cons, and that is firstly that they are high maintenance, and secondly the seams, unexplained holes, and stretchy removal cord. These really are minor issues however, and don’t really effect the actual use of the product. They have also seemed the perfect weight for a beginner, as well as being rather large which is easier to hold in than the smaller balls. Plus, they are relatively inexpensive, which is perfect if you are unsure if this is something for you.
