In case you didn’t know, I was a webcam performer for years before I started reviewing sex toys professionally. Not only was it a great source of income for an 18-year-old me who had just moved out of home, but it was damn fun. In fact, when I started it was simply because of how much I enjoyed the attention and creative outlets it provided, and only later did I start to think of it as work. But make no mistake, whilst camming can often be seen as some kind of get-rich-quick scheme, being successful takes a lot of effort, and that’s something I learned the hard way. With a million fantastic guides out there already on how to get started with camming though, I wanted to do things a little differently in order to share my experiences. So rather than writing another beginners how-to today, I instead thought I’d tell you how I took my webcamming to the next level with my 5 Inside Tips For Camming Success.
While it’s been a few years since I’ve broadcast live on a cam site now, I’m certainly no stranger to them. As a matter of fact, I regularly visit sites like Chaturbate and MyFreeCams due to the nature of some of my industry client work, in which I send out free sex toys to models for them to use during their shows. As well as working alongside and maintaining connections with popular cam performers, this means scouting them out and evaluating their work and online presence beforehand. So in other words, in addition to being a former cammer myself, I have a pretty good idea of what people are looking for and how you can avoid some easy mistakes.
Tools Of The Trade
If you’ve already started camming then you’ll probably know all about the best HD webcams and lighting set-ups. But there are a few pieces of equipment that I think are just as important. I’ve already spoken about this in detail in my 5 Best Types of Sex Toys for Cam Girls, but for a brief recap, these include items for comfort such as pillows, alongside toys that will not only keep your audience engaged, but your health intact.
While it might just seem like you’re sitting in bed on your laptop, camming, like any workplace, requires a certain level of physical support to ensure you’re not slowly wreaking havoc on your body after doing it day after day, especially when broadcasting for long stretches of time. Like the cammer’s version of an ergonomic desk chair, Liberator’s range of sex pillows are not only moisture-resistant and machine washable, but curved to keep you at that optimal angle. Plus, they also sell the legendary Fascinator Throw, which is a must-have if squirting is a regular part of your shows.
As for sex toys, there are so many options when it comes to camming, from unique fantasy-style dildos to hands-free varieties for those that like to multitask. One of the most popular, however, whose pink tail you’ve no doubt seen sticking out many a vulva before, is the iconic Lovense Lush 2, an interactive vibrator that can be connected with your broadcast to give viewers the control. The most important thing to remember when it comes to toys though, is to only insert products made from body-safe materials, such as silicone, glass and metal. Those $10 jelly toys on Amazon may be cheap, but with their usage being linked to chemical burns and cancer, it simply isn’t worth it.
Set Yourself Apart
To say there are a lot of adult performers out there is an understatement. So thinking about how you can stand out amongst the sea of webcams on sites like MyFreeCams is one of the most important things you can do, and thankfully it’s never too late to start. Plus, while visuals certainly play a part in this and will get people clicking on your profile to begin with, I’m talking more about who you are as a person, which is the reason people will stay. Whether you’re looking to showcase the real you or create a persona, singling out at least one true trait or interest you have will give you a basis for the type of niche you can fit into, helping you find an audience you can truly connect with. Some common themes are cosplay, video games, music (some performers even sing and play instruments live!), sex toys, and smoking, but really anything will work. Alternatively, you can even focus on an uncommon fetish or kink that you offer, which may be the way to go if you’d like to keep your personal life completely separate.
Customise Your Profile
So, you’ve decided on a niche, but how do you show it off? One of the worst parts about popular cam sites, such as Chaturbate, is how terribly boring and simplistic their profiles are by default. This means that unless you’re broadcasting at the same time someone is on your account, they won’t be able to find out much about you. Plus, even if you are broadcasting, you’re probably not going to want to explain who you are and what you’re about to every person who enters your room.
That’s exactly why free tools such as Designurbate exist, which help you create a customised and functional profile for your Chaturbate account in minutes. Now, viewers can simply scroll down (whether you’re broadcasting or not) to find out everything they need to know about you, including your tip menu, room rules, schedule, photos, and even links to your social media. Plus, with Designurbate you can also quickly add DMCA Protection to your work whilst companion service Stream Tout will automatically announce to your Twitter followers whenever you start camming.
Connect Elsewhere
Now that I’ve spoken a little bit about social media, let me just confirm you do have it, right? To those of us with an online presence, not having one seems a little far fetched these days, but it is actually surprisingly common for cam performers. This is understandable considering how difficult platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok make it for sex workers, but if there’s one thing you take away from this list today, it’s to get yourself on Twitter ASAP. While not completely perfect, Twitter does accept NSFW content and has been a thriving space for adult content creators for years. It is a place where performers are able to not only find their audience, but connect with them, and whether you want to use it just to promote your work or to actually share your thoughts, it’ll play a massive role in your success as a cam model. My top tip for using the platform, though, is to make sure you’re balancing the amount of retweets compared to your original content, as whilst it’s great to support other cam workers, fans also need to be able to find your own work.
Persist
Something that most cam sites do that I didn’t realise when I first started out, is provide free promotions for new models. This means that for the first few days (it differs depending on the platform, but Chaturbate offers 7 days whilst MyFreeCams has 3) you’ll be labelled as “New” and prioritised on the homepage. This gives you a massive advance and helps you build an audience right from the beginning, but it also might leave you second-guessing yourself when it’s over. For example, I kicked off my camming career with thousands of fans in my room, but once my week was up, my inability to make it over 100 viewers left me constantly wondering what I was doing wrong, and whether I was really cut out for it.
That’s why my last tip for you is to persist, because while camming might seem like a dream when you first start, the magic can get quickly lost when you realise how much work it can actually be. But I’m here to tell you that it’s worth it. As a person who suffers from anxiety, being able to set my own hours and be my own boss all from the comfort of my home meant everything to me, not to mention the sense of community it provided and far more money than I would have been able to earn otherwise. One of the best jobs I’ve ever had, camming still holds a special place in my heart, and I hope with these tricks it can become that for you too!

Great tips! I can see how Twitter would be so important to utilize. Designurbate looks like a great tool to use. I’ve never cammed for money just for fun. I kinda regret not having given it a go when I was younger. That is cool that you had that experience.
