Review: Hot Octopuss AMO

One of my most anticipated products to review in 2019 was the Hot Octopuss DiGiT. As one of my favourite manufacturers, primarily due to their ability to harness powerful yet rumbly vibes in their sex toys, the announcement that they were going to release their first clitoral vibrator was a big deal. It was well worth all the fuss too, because the DiGiT was one of my favourite toys of the year, coming in at Number 8 on my Top 10 Sex Toys of 2019 list. But whilst the vibrations were certainly there, I did have a little bit of an issue with the non-removable finger band the toy featured. While one of the main design features, so I can’t really fault it, I did find it restricted my use of the toy, and also mentioned that it might pose a greater issue for others, for instance those who are left-handed. As such, I suggested an upgrade to the DiGiT where the band could be removed, or alternatively a version without the band at all, as a fix. So, as Hot Octopuss are a fantastic bunch who actually listen to reviewer feedback, here we are again with the brand new AMO, a toy that’s very similar to the DiGiT… just without the band!

While it’s hard not compare the two, the Hot Octopuss AMO really is its own product independent of the DiGiT. You can see some comparison photos of the two here, but the main difference (other than the obvious lack of finger band) is definitely the shape of the AMO. In fact, it’s not just different from the DiGiT, but is quite unlike any other bullet-style clitoral vibrator that I’ve tried before. While most small clit vibes feature some variation of the bullet shape, usually with a rounded head that tapers to a point, the AMO instead uses hard edges to create a firm ridge on one side of it, whilst keeping the other side smooth. Out of all my toys this most reminds me of the Dame Kip, my current favourite clitoral vibrator, which uses a slightly similar design, but even then the two are quite different. The rest of the toy is then pretty much exactly the same as the DiGiT, featuring three buttons, one on one side and two on the other side, and a small handle made of ABS plastic which features the Hot Octopuss brand mark at the end. While fairly visually different due to the handle’s shiny red gradient (which I adore), the only real change here is that the Hot Octopuss logo is now printed on its side, rather than on the silicone. In addition, the AMO is also USB rechargeable and 100% waterproof, just like the DiGiT was.

My order with Hot Octopuss for the AMO was placed on the 13th of November and I received it promptly by the 17th. The package was 100% discreet, with no mention of the sender or the contents. Staying consistent to the DiGiT’s packaging, the box for the AMO was then very similar. A simple and appropriately sized cardboard box, it featured a pink, rather than red, colour scheme, while also displaying pictures and information on the toy. Opening this up then revealed the toy (which is safely secured in a card cut-out), its charging cords, instruction manual and warranty guide. Strangely this is the first Hot Octopuss product I have received without a drawstring storage bag being included, but considering the low price of the AMO and the fact that I don’t use storage bags for clitoral vibrators anyway, this was fine. Overall I am pleased with the packaging and felt it was very low-waste, which is always a plus.

As the Hot Octopuss AMO is USB rechargeable, charging it is very simple. Just plug the USB end into a USB port, and then place the other end into the charging port, which is a small hole on the toy’s side. When charging the light on the toy will flash, and this will become solid once it is fully charged. The toy should then take 2-3 hours to charge, which will give you 40 minutes of playtime.

Controlling the toy is also very easy, particularly as it is exactly the same as the DiGiT. To start, just hold down the solo button for 2 seconds, which will turn on the toy and put it on its lowest level of vibrations. You can then press the two other buttons to increase and decrease the strength of the vibrations, of which there are six levels. You can also press the solo button again to flick between the four pattern modes, which you can also adjust the strength of. Once done, just hold the solo button down again for 2 seconds.

Turning the toy on for the first time I was delighted to find that the motor for this toy, and thus vibrations, are exactly the same as the DiGiT’s. I thought the DiGiT’s powerful and rumbly vibes were some of the best I’ve ever felt in a clitoral vibrator, and so I am glad that Hot Octopuss haven’t made any changes here. Then, in regards to noise level, this is also the same, as I find it relatively quiet and think it would go unheard behind a closed door.

After finding that the AMO contained the same great vibrations as the DiGiT I was super excited to test it out and finally be able to enjoy the rumbly sensations without having to worry about the finger band. I wasn’t let down either, and my statement about the DiGiT feeling more like a wand massager than a clitoral vibrator is still very much true with the AMO. But the vibrations and controls is where my familiarity with the toy stops, as when I start to experiment with the different angles I can hold the AMO at, it very quickly comes into its own. Holding the smooth area against myself is extremely reminiscent of wand vibrators or the DiGiT, but turning it quickly presents me with a whole new range of options, for example I can place the ridges against myself which I really enjoy for thrusting on, or alternatively I can use its fine tip for immense pin-point stimulation. This versatility means that no matter what sort of sensations I am after the AMO can provide them, and I find I can orgasm quickly and easily with the toy, whether used solo or in combination with an internal toy. The only downside to the AMO may perhaps be the button placement, as without the finger bands they are not where my fingers automatically fall, and as they are also quite small it does mean that whenever I wish to change the vibration speed I have to stop and find them, however this is minor and I feel it’s also the sort of thing I would grow accustomed to over time.

Cleaning the Hot Octopuss AMO is easy as it is waterproof. Just wipe it down with some warm soapy water, rinse, and then leave to dry. Make sure to not use silicone-based lubricant with this product, as it may react badly to the silicone it is made of, but if you do then first perform a spot test.

The thing that I love most about the AMO is that not only have Hot Octopuss created this product from the need that arose after the issues myself and other’s faced with the DiGiT, but that they have taken it one step further by designing it with such a unique shape. They could have easily just made the toy exactly the same as the DiGiT except without the finger-band, but by upgrading the overall design as well it has really let the AMO shine as its own product that is more than worthy of its own review. Then, since they kept the parts of the DiGiT that were really working, such as the amazing vibrations and easy controls, it was hard to do anything but love this toy. Plus, as it is also one of the cheapest high-quality clitoral vibrators on the market, this is certainly an outstanding product that I couldn’t recommend more.
