Review: Magic Wand Mini

As with all things in life, it can often be hard to recognise change and progress when it’s part of your day-to-day. But every now and then something comes along that gives you that moment of realisation of just how far things have come, and that’s what today’s review item did for me. You see, when I first turned eighteen and decided to buy a sex toy, I scoured the interwebs for the perfect product. I wanted something with power, but at the same time didn’t have much money and needed it to be discreet. Being fond of clitoral stimulation, a wand massager was the ideal choice, but the options available were… less than ideal. After many failed attempts with mini versions, whose smaller size better suited my privacy needs at the time, I was eventually able to fork out for a Magic Wand Rechargeable, which clearly worked since it remains my favourite sex toy to this day. Still, I can only imagine how much easier things would have been for myself and others if a toy like the Magic Wand Mini had existed back then.

Background

The original Magic Wand, or Hitachi as it was previously known, has been around for a long time (1968, to be exact). But despite this, it was only in 2015 that the Magic Wand Rechargeable, its first proper upgrade, was released, with its hygienic silicone head, improved controls and cordless body. Since then things have only continued to get better, and the arrival of the Magic Wand Plus in 2020 was a true triumph for people on a budget everywhere, providing so much of what made the Rechargeable great at almost half the price, with the only real downside being its plug-in nature. Today, thanks to Peepshow Toys, I’m sharing yet another new release, and this one is even more exciting than the last. Taking what they’ve learned from the past few years, Vibratex’s Magic Wand Mini puts my two favourite features together for the first time: the Rechargeable’s rechargeability and the Plus’s price!

Product Description

So, what’s the catch this time? Well that’s what I’m still trying to work out. The Magic Wand Mini’s smaller size is an obvious one, but I wouldn’t say this is necessarily a downside outright. In fact, for a lot of people the smaller size is actually an advantage, making it more discreet, compact, and travel-friendly. So then the answer might be in its vibrations, which, at just 6000 rotations per minute, is a slight downgrade from the Rechargeable and Plus’s 6300. Plus, whilst those two toys both feature four vibration intensities, the Mini only has three. If this were any other toy, it would be a big problem for me, because I always use sex toys at their full strength. Luckily, however, the Magic Wand is the one exception to this, because it’s so powerful that I only ever use it on its first two or three settings anyway. So while it might be an issue for some, it may actually work out for me. It was only when I really started delving deeper, to the things not mentioned on product pages, that I realised the most major change to the way I use the Rechargeable: in addition to a slightly downgraded charging ratio, you can’t use choose to use it whilst it’s plugged-in, for those desperate times when you’ve forgotten to charge it beforehand. This unique feature was something that really set the Magic Wand Rechargeable apart in my eyes, so to see it missing in Vibratex’s newest rechargeable offering is a big blow. But even I’ve gotta admit, it’s a pretty good trade-off for the Mini’s price.

Aside from these changes, the Magic Wand Mini is pretty much identical to its predecessors. Outside of its smaller size, which gives it a total length of 24cm / 9.4″ (9cm / 3.5″ less than the Rechargeable and Plus) and a head diameter of 4.8cm / 1.9″, it looks exactly the same, and it has been quite weird for me to wrap my head around, with it being simultaneously familiar yet unfamiliar. The only real visual changes, although minor, is the name on the front and the screw covers on the back (the Rechargeable doesn’t have any, whilst the Plus’s fully seal the holes. On the Mini, however, they only partially cover the holes, which is so you can easily remove them if you ever wish to recycle the toy’s battery, which the instructions guide you to do). Then, while its lighter weight makes it more accessible (275g compared to the Rechargeable’s 590g and Plus’s 485g), in sizing everything down proportionality, they’ve also reduced the button size, making these a little more difficult to press. On that note, the three buttons featured match those on the Plus, rather than the Rechargeable, again switching out the pattern modes for more control over the vibration intensities. The classic white and blue colour scheme then makes a return, as does the wonderfully squishy and somewhat flexible silicone head, and like every other model the Magic Wand Mini is sadly not waterproof and requires a AC, rather than USB, charging connection.

Packaging

My order for the Magic Wand Mini was placed with Peepshow Toys around the 15th of April and I promptly received it a week later on the 22nd. The package was then fully discreet, with no mention of the sender or what was inside. As for the toy itself, this came in a sturdy cardboard box, which, while still maintaining the overall feel of the last two Magic Wands I reviewed, has a much more colorful and fun vibe to it. A welcome change from the usual old-school industrial look, the Mini introduces pops of pink to the brand’s usual blue and white colour scheme, elevating it just enough without making it scream “sex toy” (since nothing on the packaging suggests this is anything more than a back massager). Opening this up, you’ll then find the toy resting safely in cardboard and plastic, alongside a charging cord and instruction manual. In addition, the Magic Wand Mini also comes with a one year warranty, although as with past Magic Wands this is sadly only valid within the US.

Charging

Charging the Magic Wand Mini is very similar to the Magic Wand Rechargeable, with a few slight changes. As with my version of that toy, it features a US power charger, so to use it here in Australia I do need an adaptor. With this in mind, you can then plug one end of its 6 ft / 1.8 m cord into the bottom of the toy, whilst the other end can either go directly into a powerpoint if you’re in the US or into an adapter if you live elsewhere. Like I mentioned before, you sadly cannot use the Mini whilst it is on charge like the Rechargeable, and instead must wait like you would with other toys. Charging should then take around four hours, giving you around 2.5 hours of play on a full charge, a slight downgrade from the Rechargeable’s 3 hours for 3 hours. When charging a red light should appear, and this will then change to green once the battery is full. Additionally, the red light will also flash when the battery needs to be charged.

Controls

While the Magic Wand Mini most resembles the Magic Wand Rechargeable in many of its aspects, its controls are where the influence of the Magic Wand Plus can be seen. As someone who doesn’t use patterns, these updated controls were one of my favourite elements of the Plus, so I couldn’t be happier to see them back for the Mini. Basically, while the power button (press to turn the toy on or off) and plus button (press to increase the intensity) work the same as on the Rechargeable, you now also have a minus button to decrease the power, rather than a button for controlling pattern modes. This all works great and I adore the simplicity of it, especially since there’s only three speeds to choose from now.

First Impressions

While I’m not as concerned about the reduction in the Magic Wand Mini’s strength as I’m sure many people are, I do still expect a certain level of power from any toy under the Magic Wand umbrella. So while I would be happy for them to just straight up remove the fourth intensity level, since I never use it anyway, and keep the rest as is, I was worried things wouldn’t be quite as simple. Thankfully though it seems I wasn’t far off with this train of thought, as the first three levels of my Magic Wands are incredibly similar. While the larger heads of the Rechargeable and Plus do tend to make more of an impact, I’d say that the actual power levels of the Mini are a match, which is an amazing feat for its little body. What’s perhaps even more amazing, though, is that despite this it is actually a lot less noisy, with a slight reduction on the first two levels and a significant one on the third. Which really allows the Mini to follow through on its promise of being more discreet, since it is literally quieter in addition to being smaller!

My Experience

After comparing power levels between the three Magic Wands, I was more than a little excited for my first test of the Mini. Placing its vibrations on my clitoris felt all so familiar, however after a couple of minutes I realised that I hadn’t orgasmed… in fact, I wasn’t even close. Typically climax can come easily within a minute of using the Rechargeable, but it took quite some effort to achieve the same effect with the Mini. I initially chalked it off as a fluke, but as soon as I started on my second test, where I was actively comparing it to the Rechargeable, the problem was obvious. Even though the two feel so similar in power, they create a totally different sensation on my vulva, likely due to the difference in size. When using the Rechargeable, or Plus for that matter, my clitoris feels fully enveloped in deep vibrations that penetrate inside my body for internal stimulation as well as external, while the Mini’s smaller head not only targets a smaller surface area, but its vibrations remain on the surface. The change between the two is really day and night, and when quickly switching between them I can barely even tell the Mini is on. After this, there was really only one more question I wanted the answer to, and that was how the Mini would compare to my current favourite mini wand. I’m talking about the Doxy X Lovehoney Die Cast 3R, which is the Mini’s closest competition in regards to its small yet mighty selling point. Placing these two on my clitoris is a very different experience, with the 3R being far more powerful, yet also much more buzzy and loud. So because of this, I actually prefer the Mini over the 3R, which really goes to show that, despite what the rest of this paragraph might suggest, this toy is still a solid option.

Cleaning & Care

Since the Magic Wand Mini, like my other Vibratex toys, is not waterproof, you do need to be careful when cleaning it. Thankfully though the majority of my use occurs with a barrier, such as underwear, since the vibrations are strong enough to transfer through. But on the rare occasion that the toy does get messy, I just give its head a little wash with some soap and water (being careful to not let the water go on anything but the silicone), and then dry it. Since it does not attract dust you can then store it however you want, my recommendation being within arm’s reach of your bed. In addition, make sure to not use silicone-based lubricant with this product, as it may react badly to the silicone it is made of, but if you do then first perform a spot test.

Final Thoughts

Perhaps I was naive to believe a toy almost half the size and price of my beloved Magic Wand Rechargeable could ever compare to it. But on paper, it really seemed like the Magic Wand Mini was going to. While it had some weaknesses, such as a shorter battery life, no plug and play capability, and a lack of international warranty, they were all things I could easily accept if the wand delivered on its promise of power. But while it felt almost identical to the Magic Wand Rechargeable and Plus in my hands, my clitoris told a different story. If you take away these comparisons, however, then this review becomes much more positive. It is, after all, by far the best mini wand I have ever tried, which is a big deal when you realise that includes the Doxy X Lovehoney Die Cast 3R, a toy that costs $200 AUD more than it. Plus, it is just an all round good clitoral vibrator, and in the short time I’ve had it I’ve had some excellent orgasms. While at home I’ll be continuing to primarily use my Magic Wand Rechargeable, I’m so glad I now have a smaller option for trips away or times when extra privacy is needed due how much quieter it is, plus its smaller head makes a great alternative for when I want to use an internal toy alongside a wand. For those wondering what to buy, however, I’ll say this: if you like cords then go with the Plus and if you want a travel-friendly or discreet option then get the Mini, but if neither of these describe you, and you can afford it, then the Rechargeable is still the way to go.
